Imperialism
Imperialism is when a wealthy, industrialized nation takes over an underdeveloped, unindustrialized nation to use its raw materials and to dominate the political, cultural, and economic life. The four major causes of imperialism are industrialization, nationalism, White Man's Burden, and the balance of powers.
Industrialization is when a country or region produces factories and machines to produce goods faster and cheaper. Also, people start to urbanize or move to cities. Without industrialization European countries would not need as many raw materials, and there would be no reason to take over outside countries.
Nationalism is having faith in one's country and fighting for the belief you have in its success. You do not want your country to be taken over or influenced by other countries. Nationalism contributed to imperialism in countries such as Indonesia because as more countries imperialized they felt the need to "keep up" and keep the balance of powers.
The Balance of Powers is the military and economic pressure that all countries need to be above each other. As each country improves they balance out having equal power. As the countries imperialized the pressure to imperialize increased and countries felt that they needed to too, so they could keep up.
The White Man's Burden is the belief that white people or Europeans needed to Westernize the culture of far off lands. It pressed the idea that unindustrialized countries needed to be "fixed" or industrialized. The White Man's Burden contributed to imperialism because people started to feel like it was their duty to take over these people and lands so they could westernize them.
Imperialism was caused by many different forces, and was spread far and wide. However, one thing holds true; imperialized countries are almost always struggling economically and politically. You can tell even in the daily lives of the people that being imperialized affected them greatly.
